Resources

Throughout my years in real estate development, I have developed an invaluable arsenal of tools that are important to newbies and experienced real estate developers alike.   From time to time, I will add additional resources that I feel are useful to any developer.   If you have suggestions of websites, books, or tools to add, please post a comment or contact me.  Again, the tools below are meant for reference and are not at all meant to be a completely comprehensive list.

Excellent Reference Books

Some of the best books that I have found in real estate development are published by the Urban Land Institute.  In order to do any financial calculations, I highly recommend this calculator.  A few of the books that I recommend you read and that you must have (if you do not already own) are the following:

Professional Real Estate Development, Second Edition: The ULI Guide to the Business
Real Estate Development: Principles and Process
Real Estate Finance & Investments (Real Estate Finance and Investments)

Below, I highly recommend the following development reference guides, if you are interested in a specific property type.  These books are great if you are learning about the various product types and provide a good starting frame of reference.

Retail Development Handbook

Mixed-Use Development Handbook
Multifamily Housing Development Handbook
Residential Development Handbook
Office Development Handbook
Business Park and Industrial Development Handbook

Excellent Organizations

Networking and establishing relationships is essential in real estate. It is important that you familiarize yourself and join various  real estate organizations.  By joining organizations, you meet other folks in the industry who are your colleagues, competitors, and teachers.  One day, you might even find yourself doing a deal together with another individual.

Urban Land Institute (ULI)
International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC)
Pension Real Estate Association (PREA)
Commercial Real Estate for Women Network (CREW)
